Productivity That Works

Hello, my name is Paul.

I’m here because I’m passionate about helping ambitious, hard working professionals to overcome the struggle of not having enough time to get everything checked off the to do list.

I’m passionate about productivity. Maybe even a bit of a geek.

I know what it is like to feel burned out and overwhelmed with so much to do and so many projects to manage. An ever growing to do list (often bouncing around in my head) and an email inbox close to breaking.

I can remember not knowing where to start and not being able to focus on a task for more than 5 minutes. And I know that total lack of motivation to do the difficult work.

But, it doesn’t have to be this way and I’m here to help you to:​

It wasn’t long ago that I was struggling with my workload. Really struggling. I was in a new job at the beginnings of a new career – I had moved from a sales job into finance & accounting.

So I was juggling learning my new role and taking on extra tasks to try and make an impact and accelerate my career.

I was working in a Fortune 500 company for the first time and the expectations were much higher than the smaller businesses I’d worked in before.

Outside of the day job I was studying for my professional finance exams.

I had a lot going on. And I was trying to deal with things the way I always had – last minute, adrenaline fueled sprints.

But things were falling down the cracks.

I was forgetting things and missing deadlines.

It was starting to fall apart and I was struggling to cope. Feeling stressed, tired and burnt out with no time to do anything other than work at keeping my head above water.

Then I discovered productivity and time management.

I think the first thing I read was Getting Things Done by David Allen and then I started buying and reading everything I could find on ways to do more in less time. I was addicted to the search to find the holy grail of productivity, the one perfect system that would make everything work with zero effort.​

But of course I didn’t find it. It doesn’t exist.

However, each time I tried out a technique I kept the things that worked for me and improved on what I was doing previously.

Over time I built up a hybrid system mixed from the things I’ve picked up over the years. I’ve become more conscious of when I am struggling and have learnt to take a step back and look at what is driving the problem and then come up with a solution.

I’m not going pretend I have the perfect systems. I don’t. But I have good systems that work.

And they are flexible enough to adapt when workload spikes.

When I hear about new technology or read some new techniques I try them out. I keep what works and I keep making improvements.

Over those years of experimenting with productivity and time management I progressed in my career to the finance leader of a $250M business in the same Fortune 500 company where I recognized I was struggling. An even more hectic position than when I started out.

But I wasn’t stressed or feeling burnt out and was not permanently tired. I took control over the day, the week and the month ahead of me. Knowing what to do next, what is important and what I can safely ignore.

I achieved the goals I wanted to achieve.

I finished the workweek able to spend quality time on the things I want to – hiking, skiing, personal projects – without worrying about what I needed to do for work.
